Practical guide
Find useful prefixes without scanning a dictionary
A starts-with search keeps the opening letters fixed and varies everything that follows. It is useful for word games, spelling work, vocabulary searches, and clues where the first few positions are certain.
How to use this tool
- Enter the known beginning. Type one letter or a longer prefix such as PRE. The letters stay together at the start of every result.
- Set an exact length when the spaces are fixed. A length turns a broad prefix list into candidates that fit the puzzle.
- Choose the dictionary scope. Start with familiar words, then widen the search only when the clue or game calls for it.
Worked example
- Input
Starts with PRE; 7 letters- Result
- PREPARE and PREVENT fit the opening letters and the selected length.
A result such as PRESS begins correctly but is only five letters, so it is removed when seven letters are required.
When it is useful
- A crossword or spelling clue gives you the first letters and total length.
- A word game rewards a particular prefix or opening hook.
- You are comparing words from the same prefix family.
Puzzle-solving tips
- Use the longest prefix you know for a shorter, more useful list.
- If you know only the first and last letters, combine this tool with the Words That End With search or use the Crossword Solver.
- Watch for prefixes that change spelling at a word boundary; search the letters shown in the puzzle, not the meaning alone.
How WordTorch finds the results
WordTorch keeps dictionary entries whose first letters exactly match your normalized prefix. An optional length check then removes words that do not fit the available spaces.
The search is literal: PRE finds words beginning P-R-E in that order. It does not infer all words that share the meaning of a linguistic prefix.
Common Words vs All Words
Common Words keeps everyday words near the surface for ordinary clues and vocabulary work.
All Words adds rare forms and specialist vocabulary when a common list is too narrow.
Try a shorter prefix if you suspect one of the letters is wrong. A single incorrect fixed letter can remove the answer.
Questions about this tool
Does the prefix have to be a complete syllable?
No. It is simply the exact opening letter sequence, whether or not it is a formal linguistic prefix.
Can I search by first letter only?
Yes, although the result list will be large. Add a length for a more focused search.
Why is a known word not listed?
Check the selected length and dictionary. Proper names and words outside the installed local lists may not appear.
