Understand a word's base tile score
This calculator adds standard English-language letter values and shows the contribution of each tile. It is designed for quick checking, so board premiums, rack bonuses, and connected words are intentionally left for you to add from the board.
How to use this tool
- Enter the played word. Type the letters in order. Use ? for each blank tile because a blank contributes zero points.
- Read the base total. The total is the sum of the individual tile values shown in the breakdown.
- Apply board scoring separately. Multiply the relevant new tiles or word total for premium squares, then add any other words formed by the play.
Worked example

- W 4 + A 1 + T 1 + E 1 + R 1 = 8 points.
If the W lands on a double-letter square, add another 4 before applying any whole-word multiplier. The calculator itself reports the unmodified tile total.
When it is useful
- You want to compare the base value of two possible word plays.
- A blank tile is part of the word and must be counted as zero.
- You need a clear letter-by-letter breakdown to check mental arithmetic.
Puzzle-solving tips
- High-value letters matter most when placed on letter premiums, especially if the word also reaches a word premium.
- Remember to score every perpendicular word created by newly placed tiles.
- A blank stays worth zero even when it represents a normally high-value letter.
How WordTorch finds the results
WordTorch normalizes the entry to letters and question-mark blanks, looks up each tile's standard value, and adds the values. The breakdown uses the same table as the total.
The dictionary message is a separate local lookup. It helps flag obvious nonwords, but official editions and game services can use different accepted-word lists.

Do blank tiles score points?
No. Enter each blank as ? and it contributes zero, even when it stands for a valuable letter.
Are double- and triple-letter squares included?
No. This is the base tile total. Apply letter and word premiums according to the actual board position.
Does the total include a seven-tile bonus?
No. Add the applicable rack bonus separately after checking the rules of the game or edition you are using.
