Practical guide

Locate a letter group anywhere in a word

Contains searches are useful when a reliable group appears in the middle of an answer but the beginning and ending are still unknown. The entered letters must stay together and in the same order.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the known sequence. Use the consecutive letters you can trust, such as QU, AIR, or OUND.
  2. Add the full word length if known. The sequence can appear at the start, middle, or end, but every result must fit the selected length.
  3. Widen carefully. If nothing matches, shorten the sequence to the part confirmed by the puzzle before switching dictionaries.

Worked example

GROUND and AROUND contain O-U-N-D together and have six letters.

A word containing the same letters in a different order would not match. The search preserves both adjacency and order.

When it is useful

  • Several crossword crossings reveal a consecutive chunk inside an answer.
  • You are studying words built around a spelling pattern such as OUGH or TION.
  • A tile or letter puzzle asks for any word containing a fixed group.

Puzzle-solving tips

  • Use the longest reliable sequence, but do not include a guessed letter just to make the group longer.
  • If known letters are separated by gaps, use the Crossword Solver instead so their positions stay accurate.
  • Check whether the sequence could sit at either edge; Contains deliberately includes starts and endings too.

This differs from a loose required-letter search. Contains AIR finds words with A-I-R together, while a required-letter search may also accept a word where those letters are separated.

Do the letters have to stay together?

Yes. They must appear consecutively and in the entered order.

Can the group be at the start or end?

Yes. Contains means anywhere in the word, including either edge.

What if my known letters have gaps?
